North Koreans Ordered To Hand Over Pet Dogs To Be Used For Meat

The world was shocked to learn about the situation in North Korea after finding that the leader plans to use pets as a solution to the country’s food shortages. In July, Kim Jong-un declared that locals who have a pet actually break the law.

According to him, owning a dog is “a tainted trend of bourgeois ideology.”
“Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down,” a source told South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo. “Some of the dogs are sent to state-run zoos or sold to dog meat restaurants.”

North Korea deals with food shortages

A UN report reveals that North Korea faces severe food shortages, and the problem affects millions of people. Dog meat is considered a delicacy in the country, and locals are convinced that Kim Jong-un’s decision is related to this problem. Is he really willing to use pets to solve the problem?
“Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment,” a source revealed.

Several Pyongyang restaurants are dedicated to serving dog meat. Pet owners try to oppose the new law, but nothing can be done at this point. Going against the new law is nothing but an act of defiance of the supreme leader.

North Korea closed the border with China due to the coronavirus pandemic, and this decision made widespread food shortages even worse.

Beijing is the main food supplier of people in Pyongyang. Kim Jong-un thought it would be wise to block the supply from his Chinese neighbors. Natural disasters affected the harvest and people in North Korea didn’t get their usual crops.

Pork and beef dishes are considered a luxury in North Korea, so locals believe that Kim Jong-un will use their pets to prevent hunger in the next few months.
