Nothing is impossible. French filmmaker, deep-sea diver, and dancer, Julie Gautier, is proof of this. Recently, the artist danced for six minutes in the world’s deepest pool — all while holding her breath. The end result is breathtaking to watch.
As The Independent reports that ‘The Deep Joy’ pool (also referred to as Y-40 Deep Joy pool) is the deepest pool on Earth. It reaches a depth of 130 ft, which is equivalent to the height of a 14-story building! Believe it or not, the pool can hold a staggering 4,300 cubic meters of water.
The Y-40 Pool was designed by architect Emanuele Boaretto. It is located in Padua, Italy and is warmed to a temperature of 32 degrees C. This means deep-sea divers don’t need to wear a wetsuit while swimming.
In the film (below), Gautier begins by standing in the rain. She looks emotional as the camera zooms into her face. The next scene shows the artist lying on the floor of the pool. Gracefully, guided by the swift movement of the water, she begins to dance.
As the underwater cinematographer performs the zero gravity dance, her hair and flowy skirt move with her. She is the definition of beauty in the six-minute film and you’d never know she’s holding her breath for its entirety.
The short film, entitled ‘Ama’, was presented at the International Women’s Day, which took place on March 8, 2018. Reportedly, the dance is dedicated to all the women of the world.
When asked what inspired the project, Gautier replied: “I wanted to share my biggest pain in this life with this film. For this is not too crude, I covered it with grace. To make it not too heavy, I plunged it into the water.”
“Ama is a silent film. It tells a story everyone can interpret in their own way, based on their own experience. There is no imposition, only suggestions,” she explained.
As the dance concludes, Gautier is seemingly released from her “prison.” As she exhales the last bit of air in her lungs, she floats to the surface — leaving a trail of bubble behind her.
